Description

No directional earth magnetism has been discovered on Zarthuga, there are no compasses with directional arrows.

Instead, the World Pillars can be used visually to pinpoint your location on a map.

You measure the angle between the pillars with a pantagraph, then you lock it in place and lay it down on a map, making sure to intersect the pantagraph on the pillars on the map. In the angle where the arms meet, you can approximate your location. More expensive pantagraphs are larger, heavier and more precise.

Prerequisites for use:

  • The day must be so clear, and the direction clear enough, that you can actually see the two world pillars. They seem to stretch infinitely into the sky, so obscuring by lower hills is usually not an issue.
  • You must now which side of the south-north line between the pillars you are on, or which Pillar is which, otherwise your result is in two different spots.
